Toyota Wants to Build a New Celica or MR2
Teenagers today haven't seen new versions of these cars in years...probably since before they were teenagers. I'm thrilled Toyota wants to bring back "fun." They used to sell several different "sporty" cars in the 80s & 90s.
They've had three MR-2s over the years, with the last being the MR Spyder. I think the last one of those was sold around 2005. They had several different versions of the Celica, which goes back at least to the 70s. The original ones great little RWD cars. I think they shifted it to FWD sometime around 1990. You occasionally see the last Celica on the road, but they killed it off before they killed the MR Spyder.
The Celica would probably be the easiest to produce if they build it on the current (or next) Corolla platform. Would immediately buy one if it was RWD, but I'm not holding my breach. I think the MR2 would be much more difficult, since it's a mid-engine car. They would have to design it from scratch.
